A month ago or so someone placed a link to i think alibaba with a chinese seller offering electric coals for hookahs, ive always been extremely interested in this but the minimum order for them was 2000! so i sent them a email asking to try a single one out for a certain price, at first they said no but a few emails later and almost a month. I just received a email offering a sample to me, for a extremely good price. I will keep everyone updated im pretty excited but have a feeling it may be another month before i see the thing!

They look to be pretty small.. you would need 2 or 3 to provide the normal coal area coverage and temperature it looks like?

I like this part best:
You can only smoke 5 hours with 5pcs Shisha

whatever the f that means, but yea I have a problem with only getting 5 hours out of my smoke, time to upgrade to electricity.
Part of smoking hookah is culture/tradition, they had no electricity when hookah was invented and there aint gonna be no electricity in my smoke, call me ol fashioned (or biased, since I produce hookah charcoal)
Gotta hand it to the chinese though, they know how to take a perfect hobby and modernize it some how. maybe soon they think of a way to smoke hookah out of a plastic box with no water or hose.

i dont see anything wrong with such a device as long as it works.
there is nothing wrong with using this in place of traditional charcoal if the end result (ie. a nice smoking session) is the same while minimizing health risks.
and your comment about sticking with charcoal for culture/tradition, why do you sell Mya Saray hookahs then? they are not traditional in any sense and are made with machines in china. shouldnt you just stick with handmade hookahs?

there's a market for mya, people want them, that's why. also, they're pretty good hookahs, not everyone prefers them but they're engineered well and look really attractive. don't get me wrong, i'm not anti-china, almost everything i have in my house is from costco, made by the brand kirkland, which is think is actually a small province in china (jk) which means almost everything I have is chinese and it;s usually better quality and cheaper mo (so long it;s the better grade chinese imports)
but somethings you want old style/traditional stuff, like i would much rather smoke a cuban cigar than one made in china, or drink CA wine than wine made in China, get my point, that wasn't a knock against China.

I doubt a unit that small would have a noticeable impact on your bill.

The picture of a nice Khalil Mamoon TriMetal pipe, with a KM hose, a Tangiers phunnel...and some damn wire coming off the bowl just doesn't appeal to me. Some traditions are what they are. The electric coal isn't a bad idea, but I will keep my coals.

Looks a little more interesting than what's been developed before but..... I always thought they were going about it backwards. That the bowl itself should be electric, similar to a crock pot/slow cooker. Bury the coils inside the ceramic. A little vented glass top (same as the slow cooker) and logically it should work. If I had the technical ability I'd try and create one but I know next to nothing about electricity and ceramics - especially combined! I do know an electrician though who is a cigar smoker..... May have to give the man a call......

I agree w/ wildchild. The way it works now is b/c necessity forced it that way. If you can manage to make this thing work w/o having anything on top of the bowl it would be a lot better, something like that would allow you to run the cord down the side of the stem and behind the hookah and other than the fact that there were no coals on top, you really couldn't tell the difference. However, I'm still interested to see what these do as it would def make for further innovation if these sold/performed well.

Also, not to be rude, I'm curious as to the general price that these devices would be sold at....I mean, if these things are running only $20 a pop then buying 3 of them really is a savings over a few years but if they're $40 a pop then that would change my mind a bit...

the site offers them for $3.60 min. 2000; so venders would be able to sell for pretty cheap. also im not related to this wack company and im saying its right or wrong or trying to promote this. its purely for experimental and for testing purposes i have many doubts myself if this thing will work or not. no fighting about modern vs. tradition in here, for those interested watch for future updates, if you dont like the idea then this wont interest you and no one is forcing you to read this. thanks everyone. Yea but what vendor would commit to buy 2000 of these?

That is really interesting. They *should* work. I read the details and did not find an heat adjustment. Since it is DC it would be really simple to add a rheostat so you could fine tune them.
Another question would be how long one lasts. Heating elements can be flakey and depending on the design and the effort they put into QA will make all the difference.
Since I'm really forgetful I would plug it to a timer knowing that there would be times I would forget to unplug it also.

My main concern with these is that they might eventually take on bad flavor from use, especially if the shisha gets hot to the point where it starts to send up a little bit of smoke. Might be a problem, especially if they're not 100% washable...

I would hope they get hot enough to burn off any residual funk. But I hate speculating on things like this. So many variables starting with "does the damn thing work to begin with?". Then if it does you have to break down the pros and cons and if there are any tricks to make them work better.
It is definately in the companies best interest to get some out there for some testing. If there good they will take off like phunnel bowls did and 2000 will sell off at a fast enough rate so that someone will make their money back fast enough.

But I would not invest in anything without having a chance to evaluate it. Hopefully there are some things going on in the background and maybe we'll be seeing some pop up.

When I first heard of folks trying to create these things, I had an idea that I never saw there. We all know the coal heats up when we take a puff, because the airflow increases etc, and that's the real drawback to these electric ideas. What if you had an attachment that was a wire along the hose onto the mouthpiece, with a button on it. When you take a pull, you hit the button and it heats the element up to the coal temp when puffing normally? Then, when you let off the button, it goes back to the idle temperature of the coals? It would be a little bit more of a hassle to set up, seeing that you'd have to run a cord along your hose etc, but, at the same time, no coals is no ash and easier cleanup. Just a thought to anyone who's still considering working on these.

I've thought about that as well but I came up with another thought on the effect. Heat rises and we all know that of course. So while you are not hitting on it most of the heat is rising. When you hit on it though the heated air starts pulling back downward through the shisha.
Getting the perfect adjustment of the heat seems to be the bigger challenge. Throw in different peoples smoking styles (those that pull long and hard, short and hard, slow and light, etc) and you could really get into "heat micro-managing" when you think about it smile.gif

Seems like it would be easier to have a flow meter embedded in the hookah. It could tell when you were pulling and heat up the shisha.

Flow meter? I did not know there was such a thing! That's cool, and even better than my idea hah, oh well, was just tossing it out there, but if they have flow meters then there's no need for all the extra cord etc.
